A Toast to a Wonderful Charitable Cause

    Merry Christmas Eve!

If you’re reading this on the night (or day) before Christmas, I must assume that you have all of your holiday shopping done. Either that, or you’re reading it so late that all of the stores have closed, and you’re now waiting for the After-Christmas Sales to begin.

That actually has become a strategy of mine. With my family now spread out in various locales across the country, we exchange gifts whenever our schedules allow. As my darling daughter likes to put it, “Christmas is when you’re here.” Not only is that a lovely thought, but it saves me a lot of money.

I’m guessing that goes for a lot of folks these days, regardless of which holiday they celebrate at this time of the year.

And speaking of this time of the year, I thought it might be nice to devote the final “Editor’s Journal’ blog of 2007 to the charitable efforts of one of my favorite Sonoma County wineries: B.R. Cohn. A press release just came across my desk (full disclosure: it actually arrived in my e-mail) detailing that winery’s success stories of 2007. Here are some excerpts…

In what has become one of the largest annual fundraisers by an individual winery in Sonoma Valley, Bruce Cohn and B.R. Cohn Charity Events distributed $300,000 to a variety of charities on December 13, during a luncheon at the B.R. Cohn Winery in Glen Ellen.

The proceeds were generated by the 21st annual B.R. Cohn Charity Events Fall Music Festival and Celebrity Golf Classic. The two concerts on September 29-30, the Golf Classic on October 1, and the live auction/dinner on September 28 raised a record amount of money for both local charities and veterans’ services. In just three years, the winery has raised over $1,000,000 in donations for numerous charities.

This year, the proceeds are earmarked for the Sonoma Valley Mentoring Alliance, the Sonoma Valley Hospital Foundation, and the Boys and Girls Club Valley of the Moon, as well as the National Veterans Foundation, an organization that Bruce Cohn and the Doobie Brothers have supported since 1987.

The lineup for both concerts featured the Doobie Brothers, Huey Lewis and the News, Tower of Power, Lydia Pense & Cold Blood, Three Dog Night, Los Lobos, Taj Mahal, Canned Heat, Civil Twilight and Doobie Brothers offspring Lara Johnston and Patrick Simmons Jr. with Sebrina Baron.

Over the last 21 years, the B.R Cohn Charity Events Fall Music Festival and Celebrity Golf Classic have donated nearly $2,000,000 to various children’s charities and others.

“It is hard to believe 21 years have passed, yet it so rewarding to have raised this amount of money over the years for such needy causes,” noted Cohn. “It is important to note that this couldn’t happen without the support of all the musicians, volunteers and staff that puts these events together.”

So, on this Christmas Eve 2007, I propose a toast to Bruce Cohn and all of those musicians, volunteers and staff members: “To a job well done, and to the people who did it. Cheers!”

By the way, dates already have been set for Cohn’s 2008 events: October 3-6.
