The world’s greatest bottlings of Riesling are made in Germany, and Germany’s greatest Riesling is made in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer region.
The M-S-R is home to some of the most visually stunning vineyards on Earth. The growers take “hillside planting” to the extreme, as some vineyards have as much as a 45-degree slope. While this lowers the yields, it also provides for better sun exposure – very important in one of the world’s coldest growing regions.
The M-S-R (or, simply, the Mosel) also is known for its slate soils, which contribute to the mineral impression that’s evident in the finest Rieslings. There are other “quality capitals” in Germany, but Riesling from the Mosel is the country’s undisputed wine king.
