Wine and the Sound of Music

I’ve written often about the symbiosis that exists between wine and music. There’s just something magical about drinking a great wine while listening to music that touches you in some way.

And with so many great wines and so much great music, the magical possibilities are limitless.

Later this week, we’ll tell you about the just-announced Summer Concert Series at the Robert Mondavi Winery in the Napa Valley.

But today, I’d like to tell you about one of my favorite concert venues: Rodney Strong Vineyards in Sonoma County.

This summer, the “headliner” of the Rodney Strong Concert Series is Michael McDonald, a great solo performer who also contributed to some of the biggest hits of Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers. Here are just a few of the songs that featured McDonald either in the background or up front…

     “Peg”

     “Takin’ It to the Streets”

     “It Keeps You Runnin”

     “Minute by Minute”

     “What a Fool Believes”

“I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near)”

     “On My Own”

McDonald is scheduled to appear at Rodney Strong Vineyards on Sunday, August 17.

Here’s the rest of the 2008 lineup:

     * Saturday, June 21- Brian Culbertson’s Funk Experience, and Jonathan Butler

     * Saturday, July 5 – Fourplay, featuring Bob James, Larry Carlton, Nathan East and Harvey Mason

     * Saturday, August 2 – Chris Botti (whose latest CD, “Italia,” provides the perfect background music for a romantic dinner with a significant other)

    * Saturday, September 27 – Rick Braun and Richard Elliot

Concerts take place in a park-like setting on a vast lawn behind the winery’s tasting room. Yes, plenty of Rodney Strong wine will be available to enjoy during the shows.
