The second weekend in August presents travel-loving wine drinkers with a real conundrum: dueling wine festivals, equally deserving of your consideration.
Two factors could make the ultimate decision for you:
1. THE DATES. The Auction of Washington Wines runs August 13-15, while the Grape to Glass Weekend begins and ends one day later (August 14-16).
2. THE GEOGRAPHY. The Auction of Washington Wines will be held not far from Seattle, while the Grape to Glass Weekend takes place in the Russian River Valley area of Sonoma County in northern California.
Those factors aside, the two events offer very different experiences.
Auction attendees will spend most of their time at one location (Chateau Ste. Michelle), although other wineries and some private homes will be used for winemaker dinners.
Grape to Glass-goers can choose between a complete weekend package and an extensive “a la carte menu” of events. Options include a bike ride (rental bikes available), a winegrower barbecue, a spa package, an array of “behind the wines” tours and special programs, and much more.
Decisions… decisions…
