QUESTION: Can you tell us which California winery was the first to be owned by a woman?
ANSWER: In Europe, there have been women in the wine business for centuries. It wasn’t common, but it wasn’t unheard of, either.
In California, it’s believed that the first female winery owner was Josephine Tychson, who opened Tychson Cellars in 1886.
It was located in the Napa Valley, just outside (north) of St. Helena. Today, the property on which it was built is owned by the Freemark Abbey winery.
