Update: Paso Robles Wine…and Music…Country

Many years ago, when “smooth jazz” was all the rage, I can remember attending a concert by sax man Richard Elliot at the Martin Brothers Winery in Paso Robles, Calif.

The property had sort of a natural amphitheater on it. I recall bringing a blanket and beach chairs, and savoring the sounds, the scenery, the wine and a gorgeous sunset.

That winery hosted concerts for several summers, as I recall, but that winery has not been around for a while.

But this summer, another Paso Robles winery, Vina Robles, will be picking up the slack. Proprietor Hans Nef and managing partner Hans R. Michel are overseeing construction of the Vina Robles Amphitheatre, a 3,300-seat facility that will host concerts each year from May through November.

There will be luxury box seating for a premium price, but there also will be general admission lawn seating at very reasonable prices. The opening season schedule, expected to consist of about 15 events, is being developed now by AEG Live and Prescient Entertainment. We’ll keep you posted as concert dates are announced.

Paso Robles has been coming on strong as a “wine country” destination in recent years. Of course, it all begins with wineries, and the area has an abundance of those, producing a wide array of world-class bottlings.

Another requirement is lodging, and the area has a nice mix of classic hotels, bed-and-breakfast inns, and national chain motels.

Paso Robles also is home to a number of gourmet restaurants that appeal to the “foodie” in many wine fans—another “wine country” requirement.

The Vina Robles Amphitheatre could be considered the last piece of the puzzle in elevating Paso Robles to a status similar to that of the Napa Valley to the north.

Good wine…good food…good music. To me, that’s the definition of “the good life.”
