Toasts to Ring in the New Year… Plus Safety Tips for Popping the Cork

Chances are good you’ll be opening a bottle of bubbly tonight… be it a California sparkler, a Prosecco from Italy, a Cava from Spain or the real deal — Champagne from France.

There’s also a good chance that someone will have the urge to open a bottle of bubbly in a manner that results in the cork flying through the air.

That may look cool in the locker room of the team that wins the Super Bowl or World Series. But in reality, it’s an extremely dangerous practice that results in many serious injuries each year — particularly on New Year’s Eve.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology is working to spread the word about that danger, in hopes of saving a few eyes this holiday season. Please take a moment to read the AAO’s report on this topic, which includes step-by-step instructions on how to properly open a sparkling wine bottle.

Once you’ve done that, you can begin preparing your toast for tonight. Here are five that I like…

• Cheers to a New Year and another chance for us to get it right. — Oprah Winfrey

• A New Year’s toast to love and laughter and happily ever after. — Unknown

• You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself, any direction you choose. — Dr. Suess

• May all your troubles last as long as your New Year’s resolutions. — Joey Adams

From all of us at Vinesse, please have a fun-filled… and safe… New Year’s Eve.
