Triskaidekaphobia is the fear of the No. 13.
Even more specifically, Friggatriskaidekaphobia is the fear of Friday the 13th.
So, Happy Friggatriskaidekaphobia!
And if you are a Friday the 13th fearer, do not despair. You are not alone. Somewhere between 17 and 21 million people in the United States share your fear, according to the Stress Management Center and Phobia Institute.
Another way of putting it: Friday the 13th is the most feared day and date in history. And most of those who suffer from Friggatriskaidekaphobia commemorate the day by taking no risks and simply staying home.
But that doesn’t mean one must miss out on a good glass of wine. In fact, there are a number of “scary” wines that seem perfect not only for Halloween, but Friday the 13th as well.
Over the years, I’ve come across a Chardonnay called Gray Ghost, a Merlot called Velvet Devil, a Cabernet Sauvignon from Slaughterhouse Cellars, and a Zinfandel called Poizen. And, of course, Vampire wines have become perennial favorites as fall rolls around.
So if you’re staying home today because it’s Friday the 13th, put your favorite Jason Voorhees movie in the DVD player, make some popcorn and pour yourself a glass of scary good wine.
