I probably don’t need to tell you that winter is here. It began officially on Wednesday, although many parts of the country have been “feeling it” for weeks.
For some people, that means “retiring” the white wines until next spring or summer.
I can find lots of “excuses” to drink white wines during the winter months.
Here are a few of my favorite cold-weather-food and white-wine pairings…
* A rich seafood paella with the 2015 Carrasvinas Verdejo from Spain.
I love how the crispness of the wine helps tame the spiciness of the broth.
* Fish tacos and salsa fresca with the 2014 Vinum Cellars Chenin Blanc.
The folks at the winery love this combination, and I’ve found it’s a great way to spice up my life (and my palate) regardless of the time of the year. The wine is refreshing and bright and simply easy to love.
* Sushi with the 2015 Bodega Mariposa Cellars Cortese. Do we stop noshing on sushi just because winter has arrived? No, we do not.
This wine provides the perfect “excuse” to pick up a pack of rolls from the market or to make some at home, and to have a flavor-packed sushi-and-wine evening next to a warm, crackling fire.
The wine’s aromas of green apple, lime and mango may suggest spring or summer, but its vibrant mouthfeel will mesh perfectly with the spice of the sushi rolls.
If you want a nice variety of whites perfect for winter refreshment, Vinesse also has a 6 bottle set of 3 lovely Winter Whites for just such an occasion.
Time to put away the white wines until winter is over? Perish the thought!
