Happy Thursday and Hello from the Vinesse Wine Team,
For this edition of our Thursday update, I wanted to give you an insider’s view from the wine team. I hope you enjoy a few scenes from the life of a wine buyer.
What Are We Drinking
For us, this question typically revolves around where we are and what we’re eating. A few weeks ago we were up in Petaluma visiting some wineries and we were staying at the Hotel Petaluma, a restored historic hotel that dates to 1923. The hotel sits on the edge of the downtown district – loaded with boutique shops, art studios, brew houses, coffee shops and artisan restaurants. My feet quickly took me to The Shuckery where I sat at the turquoise-tiled shellfish bar, watching fresh oysters being shucked for dinner service. The piece de resistance was a red snapper ceviche with a dry Syrah rose – the fresh fruit and acid brought out the meatiness of the fish, balancing the citrus and perfectly quenching the heat of the Piquillo coulis.
What’s New
Last month we were at the Unified Symposium – one of the largest wine conferences in the US. The show is filled with informative seminars covering the wine industry ‘state of the union’, along with a plethora of suppliers featuring their latest wares – from vineyard management and winemaking, to packaging and shipping. This year we were struck by how many people were talking about the large size and high quality of the 2018 grape harvest – by all accounts, a wine lovers paradise is in store.
What’s New at Vinesse
For the wine team, even though we’re cozying up to the fireplace at home, in the cellar, we are 1 to 2 seasons ahead. We might be enjoying hot toddies and creative snowmen-building competitions, but believe it our not, we just finalized our spring bottling plans for our first wine of 2018. It’s a juicy-fruit bowl of a Sauvignon Blanc from Clarksburg, with zesty grapefruit with Meyer lemon brioche. Perfect summertime-sipping by the pool!
