The state’s annual harvest celebration known as California Wine Month has arrived. But because of the pandemic, the various special tastings, tours, auctions and other special events will take place virtually this year.
A list of events was released earlier today, and some of the highlights include:
- Aug. 24-Sept. 20 — Sonoma County Wine Auction
- Aug. 31-Sept. 30 — Explore Lake County AVAs with Lake County Winegrape Growers
- Sept. 1-30: Taste of Sonoma at Home
- Sept. 1-30 — Celebrate California Wine Month with the Santa Lucia Highlands
- Sept. 1-30 — Temecula Valley CRUSH Wine & Culinary Extravaganza
- Sept. 18 — New California AVAs and Trends in California Wine with San Francisco Wine School
- Sept. 27 — Calaveras Virtual Grape Stomp: Backyard Edition with Calaveras Winegrape Alliance
The Calaveras County Grape Stomp is nearly as entrenched in local culture as the annual Jumping Frog Jubilee, an event spawned by Mark Twain’s short story, “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County.”
And while the Jumping Frog Jubilee, part of the Calaveras County Fair, had to be called off this year, the Grape Stomp will go on — virtually.
How will it work? Here is information released by the Calaveras County Winegrape Alliance:
Teams of two register online through the Calaveras Winegrape Alliance website for a “Grape Stomp Kit” that includes a stomp barrel, 25 pounds of grapes, juice measuring devices and stomp instructions.
Once registered, teams will receive “How To” tips in an instructional video — how to set up their Backyard Grape Stomp, how to measure juice, as well as secrets from Grape Stomp Hall of Famers.
Each team will assign one Stomper and one Swabber to stomp in a half barrel filled with 25 pounds of grapes. Each team has three minutes to produce as much juice as they can, and the stomp will be recorded using Zoom online meeting services.
Costumes are highly recommended, and judging will be based on skills, spirit and originality.
