Wines to Drink With the Kids’ Halloween Haul

The spookiest day of the year has come and gone.

Chances are your kids have had to deal with one or two tummy aches caused by overindulging.

But depending on the size of their candy haul, they’re going to need some assistance so they don’t turn into Augustus Gloop.

This is where you come in. You need to procure (a fancy word for steal) some of your little ones’ candy so they don’t end up with a bunch of cavities.

It’s your duty as a parent.

The good news is that you can be a responsible parent and enjoy your favorite adult beverage at the same time.

As it turns out, some of those goodies in the kids’ Halloween baskets and pillow cases actually pair pretty nicely with wine.

Wine and candy. Seriously?

Seriously.

As long as you like the specific wine (which is a given) and the specific candy, why not?

Here are five “pairings” that members of the Vinesse tasting panel have experienced — and recommended — over the years…

* Skittles with Moscato.

* Hershey’s Milk Chocolate with Syrah.

* Kit Kat with Pinot Noir.

* 3 Musketeers with sparkling wine.

* Hot Tamales with Riesling.

Candy-and-wine pairings work for various reasons. With Skittles, Hershey’s Milk Chocolate and Kit Kat, the matching wines have complementary flavors. With 3 Musketeers, the pairing is intended to not overwhelm the silky smoothness of the candy. And with the Hot Tamales, the wine selection helps tame the spiciness — just as you’d drink Riesling with spicy Asian fare.

You made sure the kids had a fun Halloween. Now it’s time to treat yourself with some of their bounty… and a good glass of vino.
